Introduction

Do you know that more than a quarter of the population snores on a regular basis?

It can disrupting your sleep and leaving you tired during the day. It can also disturb the sleep other household members.

There are many different kinds of mouthpieces used for the treatment of snoring. They all work in the same sort of way. They either stop your tongue from sliding to the back of the throat. Or they advance the lower jaw to open your airway.

SnoreRx is one of the second type of mouthpieces, a mandibular advancement device or MAD. It claims to get you the rest you need by reducing snoring.

Lets see who makes it and how it works. Read our review.

Who Makes This Product?

The device is made by Apnea Science Corp. They are based in California.

They design, develop, manufacture, and distribute sleep-related products. These products treat conditions such as snoring and sleep apnea.

The company mission is:

To provide innovative medical products for the treatment and management of sleep disorders to advance the health and well-being of society. We integrate the latest science and innovation into patient-centered products to provide solutions for sleep-disordered breathing through the advancements in diagnosis and treatment.

What Is SnoreRx?

what is

SnoreRx is an MAD. It has been designed to fit any mouth. It is fully adjustable.

The device is made from medical grade plastic. It is hypoallergenic and has been FDA cleared. It has copolymer cushions for your teeth.

You adjust the device to fit in two ways. Firstly by the “boil and bite’ method.

  • You place the device in boiled water for 90 seconds.
  • Remove it using tongs and dip it in cold water for 2-3 seconds.
  • You then place it in your mouth and bite down for 30 seconds.
  • Finally place it in cold water for 60 seconds to set.

If you still find the mouthpiece is not comfortable you can repeat the above steps up to 3 times. Be careful not to do it more. You could compromise the integrity of the materials the device is made of.

The second adjustment you can make is for the advancement of the lower jaw. The device can be adjusted in 1 mm increments up or down. It moves 6 mm in total.

It has an indicator that provides a clear gauge of the amount of jaw advancement of the side of the device. Be sure when you adjust this that the readings of the calibration are the same on both sides.

You may adjust this as often as you like. It has a locking mechanism to hold your selected position.

SnoreRx is one whole unit with no metal parts.

The appliance also has an open front that allows you to breathe through your mouth.

You can clean the device with a toothbrush and toothpaste. The company advises soaking it in denture cleaning solution every 1 – 2 weeks.

How Does It Work

formula analysis

To understand how SnoreRx works let’s first look at why we snore.

There are many reasons but the main one is partial obstruction of our airway when we sleep. This is caused by relaxation of the muscles in the tongue, soft palate and uvula. The throat muscles also relax. This then restricts the airway when we breathe.

When we sleep the lower jaw also relaxes. This in turn causes the surrounding muscles and tissue to relax. Gravity causes your tongue to slide backwards towards your throat. Your airway narrows restricting air flow. As a result the air passing through vibrates and causes a noise. This is what we call snoring.

An MAD like this device aims to help lessen the restriction on your airways. It does this by moving the jaw forward and away from the back of your throat. This may also cause the tongue to move forward and open up the airway. This can reduce the air resistance that leads to snoring.

The incremental adjustments in SnoreRx allow it to be custom fitted. This may help to prevent you snoring. It comes set at the factory setting of 3 mm. You may not find this comfortable and need to change it.

Starting on a setting that is too high for your mouth can cause jaw pain. This can be prevented by using the right setting. Most snoring is corrected between 3-5 mm. It is advisable to start at the low end and work your way up. Adjust the device by 1 mm at a time.

The company suggests that you allow 3-5 nights at each setting. You will know when it is right. It will be comfortable and you won’t snore.

Noteworthy Features

The company tells us that SnoreRx is the only mouthguard that can be adjusted in mm increments. It states:

The OAOSA recommendations to Medicare published on Nov. 11, 2010 stated that an oral appliance should provide the user the ability to advance the lower jaw in one millimeter increments at any time. Oral appliances that employ hardware, i.e. screws, wires, nuts, and bolts, can compromise user’s health resulting in broken or chipped teeth. Those devices that utilize rubber bands, springs, or torsion to force the lower jaw forward under constant pressure may result in pain and TMJ.

Side Effects

side effects

The company advises that most people do not experience any side effects. It may however cause:

  • Gingival or dental soreness.
  • Pain or soreness to the temporomandibular joint.
  • Excessive salivation.
  • Obstruction of oral breathing.
  • Tooth Movement or change in dental occlusion.

Who Can Use This Device?

The device is designed for adults over the age of 18 years.

You should not use SnoreRx:

  • If you have full dentures, crowns, caps or bridgework that are loose.
  • If you have dental implants that are less than a year old.

And my wife sleeps in our bed again. I tried to get my dentist to make me something like that but he never did .. so glad that found this.

People have also found the customer service to be very helpful.

Deborah C writes:

Awesome customer service. My first Snorerx had an issue around day 20 with the fit becoming loose on the top. I think I must have been grinding my teeth because the back inside sections on top flattened out. I could not do the impression again as it was just too flat. I called customer service and they arranged for me to send back my unit and sent me a new one. All happened within one week! Now I am looking forward to getting the new one going and begin sleeping again! This company is really top notch!!! Highly recommend trying them out!

Not everyone was happy with their purchase. Raysa R found the device too uncomfortable.

She writes:

The piece is well-made. But it’s too bulky and uncomfortable to sleep on.. it did not take care of my snoring. However customer service is amazing. They really try to help me.

Some people have found that the device moves their teeth.

The product is OK, but it did not completely stop my snoring and I found after a week of use that my teeth seem to have shifted slightly. However they have come back to their position since I stopped using the product.
